NIOS
The National Open Schooling Institute (which is often shortened as NIOS, NOS or National Open School) is the Education Board for open schools in India. This autonomous body was established in 1989 by the Government of India. NIOS operates secondary and senior secondary examinations of the Open School system, which is equivalent to the CBSE and CISCE examinations.
At present, about 1 million students are following secondary (class 10), senior secondary (class 12) and vocational education programs by the NIOS across the country. It is one of the three national boards, and is the only board to oversee school education through open and distance education. This is equivalent to other national / state level boards of school education.
In India, if a child wants to follow the open school system, there are currently two viable alternatives to clear the regular school equivalent to the standard 10th and 12th standard examination.
Course Pattern for Board Examination
NIOS follows the learner-centric approach to teaching through open school and distance education mode. Learners are free to choose the theme combination according to their needs and goals. They can study at their own pace with specially designed self-instructional materials. According to their preparation they have the freedom to take the subject one by one.
Learning is supplemented by audio classes or video classes and face-to-face contact classes, which are organized at study centers on holidays and weekends. Registration of learners is valid for a period of five years. Students can change subjects or take additional subjects during the five-year admission period, provided that the total number of subjects is not more than seven.
NIOS offers 27 subjects (including English and 16 other languages) in secondary and 23 subjects (including English and five other languages) at senior secondary level. A cafeteria approach is offered in the choice of topics. No subject except a single language is mandatory, which can be English. Learners can also opt for business topics with academic subjects. NIOS conducts two public examinations in one academic year – in April-May and in October-November. It recently introduced On Demand Examination System (ODES), under which the learners can be present for the exam in any subject and when they feel ready for it.
Open Basic Education for All Ages
While NIOS is fast looking for many collectors at secondary and senior secondary level, many do not know that it provides an Open Basic Education (OBE) program, which is equivalent to Class 8 in a regular school. This is done through distance learning mode.
This program is largely targeted to children and adults of rural areas who do not have formal access to schools. NGOs and other bodies help with some contact classes.
